Viewing Effective Permissions

As an administrator, once a privilege scheme has been created, the effective permissions for a specific user can be viewed to confirm that the correct privileges have been given.

The effective permissions from privileges are cumulative for all groups to which a user belongs. For example, if a user belongs to a Records group whose privileges revoke access to the Dispatch module, but they also belong to a Dispatch group whose privileges grant access to the Dispatch module, then the effective permissions for that user would be privileges that grant access to the Dispatch module.

Use the View Effective Permissions area on the Privileges Scheme screen to view the effective permissions of a user.

To view the effective permissions of a user:
  1. Open the Privilege Scheme record.
  2. In the Choose User field, in the View Effective Permissions area, select the user for whom to view permissions. A privilege table is displayed, showing the effective privileges of the user based on the privilege scheme and the agency and groups to which the user belongs.

NOTE: Users who are marked as administrators in their User Profile records always have full access to the software, and privileges cannot be created for them. Therefore, if an administrative user is selected, the following message is displayed: [User] is an administrator and has full access, where [User] is the name of the user.

  3. To test the software as the user with their effective permissions, click Run As User. The Nova Dashboard screen (home page) is displayed. Near your username, the following button is displayed: Testing as [username], where [username] is the name of the selected user.
  4. Navigate through the software as desired, making sure the user can access the features as expected.
  5. To stop testing as the user, click the Testing as [username] button. The Privilege Scheme screen is displayed.
