Examples of Searching

The Search screens in the software provide a robust searching tool that covers many use cases. The following examples show how to combine multiple search options and fields, as well as wildcard characters, to narrow or widen your search to find the desired results.

Basic searching

A citizen comes to the police station wondering if their bicycle has been recovered. The bicycle is red, and has the initials "ABC" taped to it.

To search with this information, complete the following fields in the Property Search screen:
  • Type: Select Bicycle.
  • Item: Enter bicycle.
  • Color: Select Red.
  • ID: Enter ABC.
The results would include all Property records for red bicycles that have an identification of "ABC."

Using the asterisk wildcard character

A witness of a hit-and-run describes the vehicle as a "big truck," black or dark blue, with a license plate number that has the number "3" in it. The witness states that the license plate was from either California or Utah.

To search with this information, complete the following fields in the Vehicle Search screen:
  • License State: Select California and Utah.
  • License Plate: Enter *3*. This will search for any license plate number with the number "3" in it, regardless of where the number appears in the sequence.
  • Type: Select Truck-Over 1 Ton and Truck-Passenger.
  • Color: Select BlackBlue, and Blue, Dark.
The results would include all Vehicle records for trucks that have California or Utah license plates, with the number "3" in the license plate number, and are black, blue, or dark blue.

Using the question mark wildcard character

Your agency has noticed an increase in prank calls to your dispatch center. The increase began after March 3, and the associated phone number is either 999-555-5555 or 999-555-5556.

To search with this information, complete the following fields in the Call History screen:
  • When Reported: Change the search option by clicking the field label, and then selecting After. Enter 03/01 and the current year. For example, 03/01/2015. This will find all the calls that occurred after March 1.
  • Caller Phone: Enter 999-555-555?. This will find all phone numbers that contain 999-555-555 as part of the full number.
The results would include all Call records that were reported after March 1 and that have a caller number of 999-555-5551, 999-555-5552, 999-555-5553, and so on.

Using Dynamic Date levels

Your supervisor wants a list of all active incidents that occurred in Zone 1 in the past two weeks, for which you and your partner are responsible.

To search with this information, complete the following fields in the Incident Search screen:
  • When Occurred: Select the Dynamic level of Last 2 Full Weeks. This will find all the incidents that occurred in the past two full weeks, from Sunday to Saturday.
  • Officer: Select your name and your partner's name.
  • Disposition: Select Active.
  • Area: Select Zone 1.
The results would include all Incident records that include either you or your partner as the responsible officer, that have an active disposition, and that occurred in Zone 1 in the last two weeks.

Searching for blank values

Your agency needs to make sure all Business records have phone numbers. 

To search for all Business records without phone numbers, complete the following field in the Business Search screen:
  • Phone: Change the search option to find all blank values by clicking the field label, and then selecting Show Blanks. Do not enter search criteria in any other field.
The results would include all Business records that do not have a value in the Phone field.

Using the Exclude Value search option

A witness of a robbery describes a suspect as male, between 18-30 years old, and with a light skin tone.

To search with this information, complete the following fields in the Name Search screen:

  • Race: Change the search option to exclude the race value Black by clicking the field label, and then selecting Exclude Values. Select the race Black.
  • Age: Change the search option by clicking the field label, and then selecting In Range. Enter 18 and 30 in the field.
  • Sex: Select Male. If desired, Unknown could also be selected to expand the search.
The results would include all Name records for individuals who are male, between 18-30 years old, and are not Black. If Unknown was also selected, then the results would include Name records for individuals who are between 18-30 years old, are not Black, and whose sex is unknown.

Using the search field in a multi-select field

Your agency wants to know how many incidents of theft occurred last year. However, your agency does not care what specific type of theft occurred.

To search for all Incident records with a nature of theft in the last year, complete the following fields in the Incident Search screen:
  • Nature: Click the drop-down arrow. In the Search field, enter Theft. Select the Select All check box. All natures that begin with "Theft" are selected.
  • When Occurred: Select the Dynamic level of Last Year. This will find all the incidents that occurred in the past full year, from January 1 to December 31.
The results would include all Incident records with a nature of theft that occurred between January 1 and December 31 of the last full year.
